Abbie Farewell Brown was an American poet born in 1871 in Boston, Massachusetts. She began writing as Jean Neal in 1896 when she sent articles to the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Her first book was published in 1900, The Book of Saints and Friendly Beasts. It contained some of the material she’s best known for today: stories about saints and animals inspired by Christian beliefs.
