George Essex Evans was an Australian poet whose work was highly regarded during his lifetime and after his death. He was praised by many of the leading figures of his time. His first book was published in 1891 The Repentance of Magfalene Despar. One of his better-known pieces, ‘Ode for Commonwealth Day’ won an award in 1901.
