John Rollin Ridge is considered to be the first Native American novelist. His Cherokee name was Cheesquatalawny, and he was born in 1827. His career began with poetry and evolved into novels, like The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta: The Celebrated California Bandit, considered to be the first novel written in California.
