‘The Shebeen Queen’ by Mafika Gwala depicts the life of a woman running a “shebeen” and the consumerist name of her society.
Mafika Gwala was a South African poet and editor who composed his work in both English and Zulu. He worked as a teacher, industrial relations officer, and as a university lecturer. He was politically active during the apartheid and a part of the Black Consciousness movement in the 1970s.
